The devastating earthquake hit Haiti over a month ago. The first week or two following the quake was filled with telethons, urgent television spots, radio ads, promotional donations. Since then, however, many have gone on with our lives and moved on to the excitement of the Winter Olympics, impending Spring, and that great American tradition known as income taxes. It’s as if the need has disappeared with the melting of the snow and the lighting of the torch. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Haiti needs our help now more than ever. The cameras have turned off, the celebrities and their entourages are going home, but there are still countless people homeless, starving, orphaned, injured, lost, lonely, terrified, dying, in need. Just today, rain caused a Haitian school to collapse, killing three children. We cannot forget and we cannot stop lending our hand.
Spirit Voyage offers a beautiful way to help and heal. Chants for Haiti combines the musical and spiritual talents of artists GuruGanesha Singh, Mirabai Ceiba, Nirinjan Kaur, Satkirin Kaur Khalsa, Snatam Kaur, and Gurunam Singh in a beautiful invocation of hope. 100% of the proceeds to to aid Doctors Without Borders and their efforts in Haiti. Download tracks individually or give a gift to yourself and to those in need by donating $9.99 and getting the entire album. It is worth every cent and more.
Chants for Haiti is incredibly well thought out. Each song / chant is part of a healing process. Starting with “Ardas Bhaee,” Gurunam Sing calls us up and out of our seats. Nearly 8 minutes long, this song evokes a feeling of community. We are working together as one to get our prayers answered. “The Miracle is complete!” “Ra Ma Da Sa” and “Guru Ram Das” give us the means of enveloping others in a healing light. Listening, chanting a long, one finds their heart lifted and healing as well. When we heal others, we heal ourselves. “Re Man” is a prayer for turning our obstacles into stepping stones, layering drums, sitar, and voices as a ladder for climbing out of despair. Snatam Kaur lends her pure voice to the final four tracks, reaching deep into the listeners spirit and gracing us with peace. “Aad Guray” gently encourages us to bow to a greater being – Divine Truth. Truth sets us free. GuruGanesha Singh joins her for “Ma,” a song of bounty, and beauty, reassuring us all that we can rebuild, we are supported, we are nurtured, we are safe, we are protected. Chants for Haiti also addresses an issue that is often overlooked because it is not always thought of as a blessing or uplifiting: the passage of souls from one existence to another. Kaur and GuruGanesha Singh beautifully honor the dead by singing their souls to God in “Akal.” Finally, Kaur brings us back to the light of hope and the album ends with “Long Time Sun,” guiding our way on.
Spirit Voyage also provides instruction for recommended meditations with each chant in order to make the most of your practice.
